Providing the best ADHD treatment for children & teens.
While most everyone’s attention waxes and wanes, those with ADHD are able to pay attention, but have more difficulty consistently maintaining attention. This puts sufferers at risk for academic problems and learning disabilities over time. Most, but not all, also experience hyperactivity. Due to attention problems and hyperactivity/impulsivity, kids with ADHD get 10 times more negative feedback from parents, teachers, siblings and peers. All this compounds and puts them at risk for developing depression in late adolescence, while also making them a prospect for poor self-esteem and a gravitation toward more deviant peers who are easier to please. Thus, the risk for delinquent behaviors increases.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
Without treatment, ADHD can be persistent across the life span. Current treatment recommendations suggest Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) before medication (psychostimulants) yields the best long-term outcomes. CBT for ADHD focuses on parents and is often called Parent Training or Parent Management Training, which centers around rewarding the patients adaptive/pro-social behaviors while extinguishing less adaptive/anti-social behaviors. This type of training helps parents to parent effectively in a uniquely challenging situation, as kids with ADHD require more consistency, which is often difficult to achieve.
